Lao PDR: German Minister Inaugurates RIP Road and Market On 16 February
2012
H.E. the German
Minister for Cooperation and Development, Mr. Dirk Niebel, travelled to
Xaisathan District of Sayaboury Province in northern Lao PDR, to visit
projects which are implemented by the Lao Ministry of Public Works and
Transport under Lao-German Financial Cooperation with support from GITEC
Consult GmbH.
H.E. the Minister and
his delegation (comprising three German Members of Parliament, the
German Ambassador to Lao PDR and 9 journalists, among others) met the
Governor of Sayaboury Province in a remote village near the Thai border.
The Minister and the Governor jointly inaugurated a completed section of
the 85 km long road from Sayaboury to Sapi, which will greatly improve
access of the villages to markets, and to social, educational and health
services. The road is being built to gravel standard, with bituminous
surface treatment being applied in village sections for dust control,
and in steep sections to reduce excessive erosion.
Towards the end of his
visit, the Minister participated in a ground-breaking ceremony for the
construction of a new rural market which is expected to stimulate the
local economy. He also had discussions with local beneficiaries.
Both the road and the
market construction are supported under German Financial Cooperation
(KfW) as part of the Rural Infrastructure Programme (RIP). Since 2003,
RIP has improved rural infrastructure in five provinces of Lao PDR.
GITEC has been the consultant since the very beginning of the programme
which may in future be extended to additional provinces in other parts
of Laos. |
