March 2011

GITEC together with international and local partners has signed a contract for "Consultancy Services for Update Existing Feasibility Study, Concept and Detailed Design, Tendering and Supervision" which forms the second phase of the project "Reuse of Treated Wastewater for Irrigation in the Northern Jordan Valley". The Consulting Services will comprise:

  • Update Existing Feasibility Study of December 2005 and Preparation of Final Design and Tender Documents for

    • a transport system for treated effluent from the existing wastewater treatment plants to the Northern Jordan Valley (e.g. North Shouna according to present planning)

    • small storage reservoirs

    • eventual implementation of a hydroelectric power station using the potential between the locations of the WWTPs and the proposed mixing station in the Jordan Valley

    • an additional treatment plant in the Jordan Valley directly upstream of the mixing station to reach an effluent water quality sufficient for the agricultural irrigation (Construction and operation for at least one year).

  • Assistance to PEA in Tendering and Contracting

  • Site Supervision of Works

  • Assistance to PEA during Liability Period

March 2011

GITEC commenced services for the project "Thermo-technical Rehabilitation of Pre-cast Panel Buildings" in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The objective of the Feasibility Study (FS) is to define the specifications of the first investment phase of the FC-Programme and to provide the necessary and reliable documentation for KfW to appraise the request for financial cooperation, especially with regard to:

  • The selection of buildings to be rehabilitated in a first phase of about 6 mio €

  • Suggestions for the adjustments to the legal and institutional framework

  • The definition of the technical specifications of thermo-technical rehabilitation

  • The definition of social, financial and capacity building details of the FC-Programme

  • The financial amortisation and affordability of the proposed measures

  • Social, behavioural, climatic, energy saving, environmental and other aspects and foreseeable consequences of the programme.

 
March 2011

GITEC has been awarded with a contract for Consulting Services for Baseline Study for an Impact Assessment (RTPR-BS) within the programme "Rural Transport for Poverty Reduction in the Southern Province of Zambia". The baseline study shall be suitable to serve as a basis for an impact assessment of the programme regarding the situation on mobility, poverty and health after the programme measures will be finalised. The objective of the baseline study is to provide information on the baseline situation (household, community and district level) with regard to mobility, accessibility of markets, of (social) services, of goods and of employment opportunities. Moreover, data on the status of poverty and health as well as gender equality in the project area will be provided. Also, short information on people’s perception of influencing decisions concerning road construction, -rehabilitation and transport solutions relevant for them will be gathered. The consulting services commenced recently.

 
March 2011

GITEC commenced services for the project "Detailed Study for Social Investment Fund IV - Secondary and Local Roads Component" in Albania. The Feasibility Study  consultancy has the prime task to examine a list of some 180 km of largely regional roads in close cooperation with Albanian Development Fund (ADF), amend it where necessary and come up with a final selection of roads for upgrading. The work will involve a review and analysis of the available C/B data, the ADF ranking system and suggested amendments by the Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) consultant as well as complementary investigations aimed to analyse and rank the screened shortlisted roads in the project region. This will be complemented by a brief review and adjustment of the FC implementation programme as presented in the PFS.

 
January 2011 - IGIP and GITEC: A joint future:

IGIP (Ingenieurgesellschaft für Internationale Planungsaufgaben mbH), Darmstadt, and GITEC Consult GmbH, Diisseldorf, have formed a consolidated company of two strong strategic partners in the German and international development cooperation under the roof of the BURGEAP IGIP Holding SE. As from 01.01.2011 IGIP has taken over 95% of the shares of GITEC. Mr Thomas Harbauer, new CEO of the company, holds 5% of the shares. The management and business culture as well as the long-standing experience of both companies in the development cooperation on 4 continents complement excellently one another as well as their technical and regional core areas. As of now the BURGEAP IGIP Holding SE is a leading consulting group in the sectors environmental protection and international development cooperation. GITEC persists as an independent company and being strengthened will shape the future with our clients as a reliable, innovative and professional partner furthermore under the utilisation of an extended spectrum of synergies and strategic advantages which arise from the new grouping. January 2011:

With 1 January 2011 Dipl.-Wirt. Ing. Thomas Harbauer is succeeding Dr.-Ing. Gert Bergen as General Manager of GITEC Consult GmbH. Mr. Harbauer will manage the company together with Dipl.- Ing. Andreas Oberländer (Managing Director).

After a long-standing dedicated and successful activity in the management Dr.-Ing. Gert Bergen is leaving GITEC for retirement. Since more than 35 years Dr.-Ing. Bergen has worked for GITEC in different positions as Project Manager, Head of Department and since 18 years as General Manager. He led GITEC to its international success, for which he was instrumental.

Mr. Harbauer started his career with the DEG, a subsidiary of KfW, as Investment Manager where he was responsible for the project funding of investment plans for German companies in South America, Asia and Eastern Europe. Before joining GITEC he worked as Director of Dyckerhoff AG and as Member of the Board of Dyckerhoff Basal Nederland b.v., an international producer of construction materials. There, he was responsible for the operative entities in the Netherlands and Germany.

October 2010:

Dr. Gert Bergen, General Manager of GITEC, was invited by the  CDU/CSU parliamentary group to deliver a speech on "Water for People" within the workshop "Water - A Key to Sustainable Development". The workshop took place on 7 October at the Paul-Löbe-Building in Berlin. Click here for details about the workshop including the slides presented during Dr. Bergen's speech.

 
August 2010:

The Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Tajikistan entrusted GITEC and a local partner company with the project "Sustainable pasture, arable and forest land management". The project is financed by the Asian Development Bank. The services commenced early August.

 
July 2010:

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) awarded a contract to GITEC and their local partner firm for assessment of groundwater in the Tanzanian Pangani river basin. The consulting services have commenced.

 
June 2010:

GITEC has been awarded with the GTZ funded programme of the improvement of the blood transfusion system in India. This is an ongoing programme since 2008, and intends to supply quality and safe blood and blood products in order to ensure that the population in need has universal access whenever required.

January 2010:

The Government of South Sudan represented by the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation requested assistance for the design, planning, financing and implementation of rehabilitation and extension works of existing water supply systems in the state capitals of South Sudan with an immediate priority to the town of Yei. It was decided to prepare a feasibility study for the establishment of a water supply and sanitation systems, based on a poverty oriented phased approach.

The objective of the feasibility study is to develop a technical and managerial concept for improving the water supply and sanitation situation in a sustainable way for the entire population of Yei, South Soudan. The concept proposes a stepwise implementation approach. The first phase of the implementation pays particular attention to improving the situation in the areas with the worst water and sanitation situation and with the most vulnerable parts of the population.

 
January / February 2010:

GITEC commenced services for a project in Mali. In February new projects in Mongolia and Syria will be started.

 
December 2009:

GITEC, as member of the task force “Health Infrastructure in Development Countries and Emerging Markets” of the BDI, the Association of the German Industry, has supported professionally and financially a study on “Hospital Environment - Potentials of Co-operation between Development Aid and Foreign Trade”. The study, which has just been published by the BDI, points out amongst others, that there is a need for investment of 150 billion EUR in health infrastructure in developing countries and emerging markets. First results are in discussion between the BDI and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Mrs. Mendoza Chavez has been promoted to the position of "Deputy Head of Department Water Resources and Sanitary Engineering”. Since 5 years Mrs. Mendoza is successfully supporting the performance of the department and the company.

 
October - December 2009:

In three courses of 3 days each GITEC staff has been certified in Capacity WORKS, the new management model for sustainable development of GTZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit).

 
 
July 2009:

GITEC became member of the initiative "Health Infrastructure in Developing and Emerging Countries". The initiative was founded by the BDI (Federation of German Industries) and brings together important German companies working in the field of health care. The ongoing pilot project is promoted by the Federal Ministry of Economic Co-operation and Development together with KfW Entwicklungsbank. For detailed information please click here.

 
May 2009:

GITEC with Partners commenced the services for the projects "Sustainable Development of Disadvantaged Rural Areas, Yunnan Province" and "Poverty Alleviation Project, Hunan Province" (People's Rebublic of China)". The projects are financed by the Federal Republic of Germany through Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau. Both projects aim at contributing to the sustainable alleviation of poverty in selected villages. In Hunan province, the project activities are located in Fenghuang and Pingjiang County, in Yunnan Province the project covers the counties Huize, Xuanwei and Shangri-La.

 
March 2009:

On the occasion of the handover ceremony for National Road No. 6 in Houaphan Province on 28 March 2009, Andreas Oberländer, Managing Director and Director of GITEC's Transportation and Construction Department, has been awarded with the Government Labour Medal Level III, signed by the President of Lao PDR, for his contributions to the development of the country during the last 15 years. The ceremony has been attended by the honourable Minister of Public Works and Transport (MPWT). This award is the highest award a civil individual can obtain from the Government of Lao PDR and a token of highest appreciation of an exemplary and dedicated cooperation between Mr. Oberländer and the honourable Minister and MPWT staff.

 
March 2009:

GITEC commenced the consulting services for the project Rural Transport for Poverty Reduction in the Southern Province of Zambia (Feeder Roads). A total of about 1,640 km of rural roads (34 project roads) in all 10 Districts of the Southern Province are foreseen to be improved. About 1,090 km will be rehabilitated in full length or in sections and about 550 km will receive spot improvement measures to improve accessibility. The Pre-Phase, Phase 1 and Phase 2 cover 40 months. Through a socio-economic monitoring the effects of this road rehabilitation programme in support of poverty reduction will be monitored regularly and documented.

 
February 2009:

The Millennium Challange Account Armenia awarded the contract for the project "Design for Rehabilitation of Ararat Valley Drainage System" to GITEC and its partners. The contract was signed on February 20, 2009 by Mr. Ara Hovsepyan, CEO MCA-Armenia and Dr. Wolfgang Jendrischewski, Director of GITEC's Water Resources and Sanitary Engineering Department. The project includes analysis of the ecological situation, hydrology, surface and subsurface horizontal drainage systems and wells in the Ararat valley, social and health assessment as well as designer's field supervision. The works commenced in March and will last for 31 months.

 
November 2008:

GITEC has signed a contract with "Hrvatske ceste d.o.o. (HC)", the croatian state-owned company responsible for management of about 7,000 km of state roads. The project is financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and intends to investigate the feasibility of introducing performance-based contracting models in order to improve the efficiency of the routine maintenance program for roads administered by HC. The works will commence by mid-November.

 
September 2008:

As from 15 September Mr. Andreas Oberländer, who has been successfully working for more than 3 decades with GITEC, has been promoted to Managing Director of GITEC thus sustaining GITEC's future development. Dr. Gert Bergen shall continue to act as General Manager.

 
May 2008:

GITEC participated in the "Plaza of Biodiversity" which was part of the 9th UN Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity. The conference was held in Bonn from 19 to 30 May 2008.

GITEC presented two projects: the "Transboundary Joint Secretariat for the Southern Caucasus" covering national parks in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia and "Protection of the Atlantic Rain Forest in the State of Rio de Janeiro" in Brazil (click here for project details).

 
April 2008:

GITEC has started the Consulting Services for the Rajasthan Minor Irrigation Improvement Project (RAJMIIP).

The project aims at improving the livelihood of farmers by rehabilitating and improving existing minor irrigation infrastructure; at the same time encouraging them to form Water User Associations, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility starting with participation in rehabilitation design procedures, contributing in cash and in kind to its realization and ultimately leading to sustainable operation and maintenance.

The 5-years project is financed by a loan from the Japanese Government through the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation (EUR 70 Million) covering the four water conservation zones of Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota and Udaipur.

 

 

January 2008:

"Indonesia thanks the world for the post-tsunami support". The Indonesian government held a thanksgiving reception at Balai Sudirman Hall in Jakarta on January 24 for the participation of 34 countries and more than 600 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the emergency restoration efforts in Aceh and Nias in the wake of the tsunami in 2004. The manager of GITEC's project "Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of Housing and Settlement in Aceh Province (RRHS)" attended the reception.

 

 

January 2008:

GITEC with partners was entrusted by KfW to carry out the Feasibility Study "Reproductive Health Commodity Financing Mechanisms”. The study is part of the programme “Reproductive Health and HIV Prevention in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Region" and aims at providing the technical, organisational and administrative elements in order to set up and operationalise Reproductive Health (RH) Regional Financing Mechanism in ECOWAS countries ensuring the collection and management of the necessary data to meet effectively the needs in RH.

 

August 2007:

In Aceh Province, Indonesia, a ceremonial hand-over of 2,420 plots to the new house owners took place. The houses were constructed within GITEC's project "Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of Housing and Settlement in Aceh Province (RRHS)". The ceremony was attended by some 7,000 beneficiaries and representatives of the governmental programme executing agency BRR, local administration, churches, KfW and GITEC.

  

August 2007:

GITEC with partners has carried out a Feasibility Study for an intended KfW investment regarding the health system of the Republic of Tajikistan and hospital services in Khatlon oblast (12 sites).

 

May 2007:

Dr. Thomas Wolff, head of GITEC's health department, attended the conference "Economic Reward of Investing in HIV/AIDS Prevention and Health".  The conference was held on 30 and 31 May 2007 at the German Bundestag in Berlin prior to the G8 summit in Heiligendamm in order to develop an appeal to the G8 Leaders Meeting and was organised by the German Foundation for World Population (DSW), the European Parliamentary Forum on Population and Development and the Parliamentary Advisory Committee of the German Foundation for World Population. The conference's resolution was incorporated into the final G8 document “Growth and Responsibility in Africa”.

 

March 2007:

February 2007:

After some years of absence, GITEC returns to poverty-stricken Mozambique in order to start the KfW-financed FINDER Project which deals with the Set-up and Operation of an Investment Fund for Rural Development. The project will start in March.

 

February 2007:

GITEC commences work in Ecuador on the project "Protection of the Rain Forest Morona Santiago - Pastaza".

 

January 2007:

GITEC has started the "Vocational Training Programme" in Lao PDR. The project aims at increasing the capacity of vocational and teacher training institutions by the extension and modernisation of up to five Integrated Vocational Education and Training (IVET) institutions.

 

December 2006:

The Honourable Minister for Economic Co-operation and Development of the Federal Republic of Germany, Ms Wieczorek-Zeul, visited our projects in Banda Aceh.

 

December 2006:

GITEC commences work in Southern Lebanon on immediate reconstruction measures. The Lebanon is a new country for GITEC.

 

October 2006:

After more than 25 years we are back in Sudan, a country in which we were very active in force account construction of roads and water supply systems. Now we contribute to the establishment of a road maintenance department.

 

September 2006:

On 18 September Mr. D. P. Giesler, founder and chief executive officer of GITEC for many years, passed away. The management and staff of GITEC will keep his achievements in honourable memory.

 

September 2006:

GITEC's head of Department, Mr. Keil-Bruder, received the Friendship Award from Liaoning Provinvial People's Government, People's Republic of China, for outstanding consulting services in the forestry sector.

 

September 2006:

GITEC organises a three-day kick-off meeting in Van, Turkey, with participating water councils of Batman, Van and Siirt, representatives of KfW and representatives of the joint venture partners for the extremely challenging project "Human Resources and Organizational Development (HROD) in the Municipalities of Batman, Siirt and Van".

Community-managed irrigation in deprived sensitive areas of Nepal is the key to peaceful development addressing pro-poor approach. In August GITEC and its partners have been entrusted by ADB to execute the "Community-Managed Irrigated Agriculture Sector Project (CMIASP)".

May 2006:

Monitoring the HIV/AIDS Prevention and Reproductive Health Programme in Mali: The financing of condom and contraceptive procurement, the establishment of test and counselling centres, of linkages to therapy, and media campaigns are key activities of the KfW-financed programme. GITEC has been assigned as monitoring consultant, and conducted the first of a series of respective missions in April.

 

March 2006:

Presentation on COP 8 in Curitiba, Brazil: The GITEC-advised project “Protection of the Atlantic Rainforest Mata Atlântica” in the State Rio de Janeiro is presenting its scope of work on the 8th Ordinary Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 8).

 

December 2005:

Addressing the needs of earthquake and Tsunami troubled areas on Sri Lanka: In December 2005, GITEC has been entrusted by GTZ to advice on the rehabilitation of the economical, physical and social infrastructure in several districts.

 

November 2005:

Paving the way on Caribbean Aruba: The construction of economically and ecologically sound roads in the Aruba National Park is supervised by GITEC from this month onwards.

 

October 2005:

Enhancing the positioning of two newly privatised water utilities in Armenia: GITEC is entrusted to advise the young enterprises on their infrastructure investments, managerial skills and issues.

 

August 2005:

Heading to Tsunami and earthquake affected Aceh Province in Indonesia: KfW entrusted GITEC with joint venture partners to implement the two-year project “Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of Housing and Settlements in Aceh Province (RRHS)”.

 

July 2005:

Pro-poor-driven road improvement in Zambia on it’s way: In its Feasibility Study “Rural Transport Programme in the Southern Province of Zambia” (KfW) GITEC translated the innovative pro-poor-growth concept into a new praxis-driven approach for road construction.
